The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration & Control alongside the Emani Global Network has said that it will be carrying out an on-the-spot analysis of packaged water popularly known as “pure water” in Rivers State.

The Chief Executive Officer of ENGL, Mr. Emmanuel Osiegbu, made this known in a statement obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday.

According to him, the initiative is to safeguard the citizens, especially with the recent unsatisfactory results of laboratory analysis of some packaged water in the country.

The two firms, he said, would be using a mini mobile laboratory to ascertain the quality and standard of packaged water sold to the public.

Osiegbu added, “Laboratory analysis of packaged water by NAFDAC has shown that some of the brands are below standard without the right pH, lead content and other parameters. This exercise will find out and address all the shortcomings observed and proffer solutions where necessary.”

Osiegbu, who accused some producers of packaged water of not having mini labs to enable them to produce quality of water, added that the fresh initiative has the National Assembly’s Committees on Health support.

The planned testing, which will hold across the country, he said, would be an annual exercise.

The NAFDAC Coordinator in Rivers State, Mrs. Mercy Ndukwe, in her remarks, urged water producers in the state to participate in the exercise to ensure that the public consume safe and wholesome water.

Ndukwe stated, “All packaged water producers (about 400) in Rivers State are to take part in this exercise and this will exempt them from going to public analysts during the renewal of their products.

“There will be sanctions, including the shutting down of companies and withdrawal of licenses of those who refuse to subject their products to the analysis.

“NAFDAC has been waging a relentless war against unwholesome water producers in the state and will not hesitate to clamp down on any producer who compromises standards.”

The Chairman of the Association of Table Water Producers in the state, Alex Erikosima, lauded the initiative.

Erikosima, who urged his colleagues to support the move, also advised them to adhere to standards in order to prevent water borne diseases.
